Social stigma is the term given when a person's social, physical, or mental condition influences other people's views of them or their behavior towards them. Members of the general public may be uneasy with someone who appears or behaves differently than what they consider “the norm”. Stigmas associated with mental health issues come from misguided views that these individuals are “different,” from everyone else. Early beliefs about the causes of mental health issues led to caution, fear, and discrimination. Some of these beliefs remain today—and are myths that need to be broken.
Objectives:
In this community-based training webinar together, we will:
- Gain an understanding of how stigma affects society as a whole
- Understand the importance of working together to make significant and necessary changes to break the grip of stigma in our country
- Learn specific ways that each of us may be a part of the change and how to influence others to also make a difference
